Nix fractures hand

Jayson Nix was hit by an R.A. Dickey knuckleball during Wednesday night’s game against the Blue Jays. He jogged to first base but was removed and sent for X-Rays which revealed a fractured left hand.

This is obviously nothing new for the Yankees who have seen their fair share of injuries over the course of the season. Nix had already been sidelined for an extended period after aggravating his hamstring in July. Since August is drawing to a close, the fractured hand will likely end Nix’s year.

This season, he was hitting 236/.308/.311 with three homers and 24 RBI in 87 games. Yesterday, he smacked a solo homer to tie the game at two in the seventh, and then eventually delivered an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth to give the Yankees a 3-2 win. With Derek Jeter out and Eduardo Nunez limited to just one position, Nix was a jack of all trades for Joe Girardi.

The Yankees have recalled Preston Claiborne to take Nix’s spot on the roster, which signifies that maybe Derek Jeter is close to retuning.
